Will Virtual Restaurants Affect Home & Apartment Kitchen Design?

Updated: Feb 27, 2019

Residents of New York are often used to having small kitchens, but the trend towards home meal delivery may be impacting residential kitchen design globally.

How many people do you know with a beautiful "chefs kitchen" who rarely cook? A large and beautifully equipped kitchen has traditionally been considered a strong selling point for real estate. But could the rise of takeout and home delivery from Virtual Restuarants impact that in the future?

An interesting article from Australia discussed a large, newly built residential apartment development, which offered two kitchen layouts. The second was more tailored to those eating in, with large open spaces and an extended island and breakfast bar with less cooking space.

More than 70% of buyers selected the order-in themed configuration. Given rising rents and a trend towards smaller more efficient spaces, the kitchen of the future could be less expensive and much more compact.
